A Report
On
Undergraduate Summer School on Computer Science
Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
Bangalore
(24th to 28th June 2013)
 
 

A five-day Summer School on Computer Science was held in the Department of Computer Science and Automation (CSA), IISc, Bangalore. Mr. Rajan Kumar, student of, B.Tech (I.T.) IV Sem got an opportunity to participate in this national level five days summer school along with 65 other participants from different colleges across the country.

 

The Summer School was inaugurated on 24th June, 2013 by CSA IISc Chairman Prof. Y. Narahari He said that the main aim of the summer school is to introduce undergraduate students to cutting-edge research in computer science.

 

Several Talks and Hands-on Sessions were conducted by the department faculty, research scholars and industry experts, covering theoretical, applied and modern aspects of computer science. It covered topics like Algorithms, Automata Theory, Compilers, Cryptography, Computer Security, Database Systems, Game Theory, Graph Theory, Big Data, Machine Learning, Operating Systems etc. The summer school opened a plethora of research opportunities that is possible in the field of CS and IT. IISc Ph.D. student were directly involved in organizing this event. They came forward to help in many aspects, including website design, reviewing and scrutinizing the applications, giving talks, arranging for accommodation, looking for decent hotels, creating a puzzle contest and many more. They also gave us lectures on their research topics and other subject including MATLAB, Math Puzzle, Machine Learning etc. At IISc the participants were surrounded by the best faculties and scientists of India whose only motive was “Lead with the Best Knowledge and Technologies”.

 

It was a life time experience for the participants to devote their five days at India’s best research institute. They had the opportunity to study and work on 3D Printer and Machine Learning Lab. The class timing were from 9:00 AM to 06:00 PM. Rajan Kumar was allotted the project “Algorithm to Code Translator”. Mr. P. Balamurugan, an expert on Game Theory , Data Mining, Machine Learning was Mentor to Rajan. He covered the entire spectrum of the subject.

 

A mathematics puzzle was conducted and ten participants were randomly selected for spotlight presentation of their project, the prizes were given to them according their performance.

 

On 28th June, 2013, Valedictory Session took place in the lecture hall with the opening remarks of CSA IISc Chairman Prof. Y. Narahari. The participants were awarded with the Certificate of Participation.
