3rd INTERNATIONAL GREEN MANUFACTURING SUMMIT

Ms. Mahamaya Mohanty, Associate Professor, Department of Information Technology DGI, Greater Noida was delegated to attend the 3rd International Green Manufacturing Summit- “Making Green Manufacturing Mainstream-a Strategic Imperative for the Business of Tomorrow” along with Ms. Priyanka Aswal, student of B.Tech - IT IIIrd Semester, held at Hotel Shangri-La, Ashoka Road, New Delhi on 27th August 2013. The summit was attended by over 200 delegates from industry, academia and research & development background.

 

The inaugural session started with welcome remarks by Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII. It was addressed by Mr. K. Venketaraman, Chairman, CII Manufacturing Council. The special address was given by Mr. Ajay Shriram, President Delegate, CII and Dr. Santunu Behuria, Secretary, Department of Heavy Industry, Government of India.

 

Mr. Praful Patel, Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Government of India as the Chief Guest addressed the inaugural session. He released the CII-BCG report on Green Manufacturing-Imperative for Indian Industry .The concluding remarks of the inaugural session was given by Dr. Arindam Bhattacharya, Vice-Chairman, CII Manufacturing Council.

 

The entire session focused on global economy, green manufacturing by supply chain management, creating and building green hubs, reducing carbon emissions. Mr. Praful Patel, emphasized on integrating, accelerating and outperforming the ideas for implementation of green products that includes new avenues of growth, renewable sectors, machinery equipments, consumable durables. He also focused on the importance of research and development in eco-system during the Green Building Movement.

 

The special session on “Visionary Leaders Panel on Green Manufacturing” was moderated by Dr. Arindam Bhattacharya, Vice Chairman, CII Manufacturing Council. The panelists of the session were Mr. K. Venketaraman, Chairman, CII manufacturing Council, Mr. Pradeep Bhargava, Director, Cummins Generator Technologies India Ltd., Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO, Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor development Corp. and Mr. Joginder Singh, President & CEO, Ford India. The session deliberated about the economics of green manufacturing and discussion of business cases for green manufacturing, furististic implications and cost advantages. The discussions were on sustainability and it being an imperative given the current conditions on how proactive ‘leaders’ in this space are moving ahead.

 

The panel discussion was on “Regulations and Incentives for Green Manufacturing”. It was chaired and moderated by Mr. Pradeep Bhargava, Director, Cummins Generator Technologies India Ltd. The session deliberated on new policies and initiatives government has taken in the area of green manufacturing as an encouraging policy that would adopt green ways of manufacturing in the industry. It focused on new directives, schemes, incentives, regulations, standards, norms etc. in key sectors such as automobiles, infrastructures, chemicals, cements, steel, renewable energy, power etc. The session also discussed on standards and rating that could be established as a benchmark for green manufacturing. The panelists of the session were Mr. B. Thiagraja, Executive Director & President-AC&R Products, Bluestar India, Mr. S. Raghupathy, Executive Director, CII, Mr. Sohrabji Godrej Green Building Centre, Dr. S Raj Kumar, Engineering Manager, Larsen & Tourbo, Mr. Saumitra Kumar Rai, Head- Client Systems and Enterprise Mobility, Wipro Infotech and Mr. Amit Kumar, Head Business Strategy Consulting, Nomura Research Institute India.

 

There were two plenary sessions. The Plenary Session-I was on “New Technology & Innovation”, sessioned by Mr. K. Venkataraman, Chairman, CII manufacturing Council. The key note address was given by Mr. Ajay Shankar, Member Secretary, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council. The special address of the session was given by Mr. Ambuj Sharma, Joint Secretary, Department of Heavy Industries and addresses by Dr. Chandan Chowdhury, Managing Director-India Geo, Dassault Systems, Mr. T. S. Jaishankar, Director Commercial and Executive Vice President, Toyota Kirloskar Motors, Mr. Nanda Lakkaraju, Director Operations, Carrier Airconditioning and Refrigeration Ltd and Mr. Amresh Deshpande, Associate GM, Schneider Electric. The session has identified and highlighted the latest trends and importance of new as well as emerging technologies and innovations in creating green manufacturing processes. It discussed on 3D design technologies, energy efficient technologies, processes waste heat recovery, alternate fuels and energy, digital manufacturing, green materials, green structures, innovation at shop floor for enhanced sustainability etc. The session has also focused on the role of IT in resource optimization which is the solution provider for energy efficient manufacturing, reduction of wastages and creation of smart cities etc.

 

The Plenary Session-II was on “Taking Green products to the market-building a green product platform”. It was chaired by Mr. S. Sandilya, Chairman, Eicher Motors. The key note address was given by Mr. Niklas Nillroth, Vice President Core Value Management, Volvo Construction Equipment, Sweden. The session was addressed by Nalin Jain, President & CEO, South Asia, GE Transportation and Aviation, Mr. V. M. Crishna, Executive Director, Godrej & Boyce and Mr. Umesh Krishnappa, Vice President-Plant Operations & Business Excellence. The session focused on green consumerism and the preference of consumers towards a greener product, success and challenges in promoting green products and the policy interventions required for promoting green products along with carrying out best practices for cross sectorial learning.
